What is ALTCS?
ALTCS is the Arizona Long Term Care System, the long-term care arm of Arizona's Medicaid program (AHCCCS). It covers ongoing care for Arizonans who are elderly or have a physical or developmental disability and who meet both a medical and a financial eligibility test.
What does your ALTCS help cost?
The overview, the coaching, and helping you work out whether your loved one is likely to qualify are all free. So is the placement itself. If you want us to manage the full application for you, that is a separate service with a fee based on the complexity of the case. We will quote it before you commit to anything, and plenty of families never need it.
What are the ALTCS income and asset limits?
AHCCCS publishes a gross monthly income limit of $2,982 for an individual, effective January 1, 2026. The asset limit for a single applicant is generally $2,000, with significant exclusions. A primary home and personal belongings are commonly excluded. Married couples are assessed differently and a Community Spouse Information Sheet applies. These figures change annually, so confirm current limits with AHCCCS at azahcccs.gov or 602-417-4000 before relying on them.
What if my loved one's income is over the limit?
Being over the income limit does not automatically disqualify someone. Arizona recognizes an income-only trust arrangement in some circumstances, which is a legal instrument set up with an elder law attorney. We are placement advisors, not attorneys. When a situation calls for legal advice rather than ours, we will say so and refer you out.
How long does ALTCS approval take?
It depends on how complete the application is and when the assessment can be scheduled. Weeks rather than days is normal. We help families arrange care in the meantime so nobody is sitting at home unsafely waiting on paperwork.
Do all Tucson care communities accept ALTCS?
No, and this is one of the most important things to know before you fall in love with a place. Many private-pay communities do not accept ALTCS at all, and some accept it only after a period of private pay. We know which Tucson communities take it and will steer you accordingly from the start.
